Support Clean Air Day with Singletons

At Singleton’s, we’re always thinking about ways we can minimise our carbon footprint and reduce air pollution. Scrap metal recycling plays a huge part in helping to clean up our air!

What is Clean Air Day?

Clean Air Day is a campaign that raises awareness of the air quality and pollution in the UK. Clean Air Day is celebrated annually on the third Thursday in June, and this year it was held on June 19th. The campaign puts a spotlight on air pollution and suggests ways we can all do our part to reduce it, to create a healthier, cleaner planet.

What is air pollution, and how do we stop it?

Air pollution is the biggest environmental threat to our health, no matter who you are or where you live. In areas like Manchester, the risks are much greater as cities see much larger volumes of air pollution than in rural towns and villages. Long-term exposure to air pollution in the UK is incredibly harmful to humans, animals, and nature. The annual Clean Air Day campaign encourages people to take action by writing to their local MP to ask what they’re doing to reduce their carbon footprint and improve air quality in their area. The key focus for the 2025 Clean Air Day is to promote cleaner transport options, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and improve energy efficiency.

How can scrap metal reduce pollution?

Scrap metal recycling plays a huge role in cleaning up our air quality by directly reducing the environmental impacts of metal production. Recycling scrap metal requires significantly less energy than mining metal ore and new metal production. Recycling metal produces less greenhouse gas and air pollutants and reduces the need for heavy-duty industrial processes, which pump out harmful toxins. Encouraging more people to recycle their scrap metal and educating them on the benefits of recycling, and how damaging producing metal can be to the environment, helps to promote sustainable practices that will contribute to cleaner air and create a healthier planet. A circular metal economy would use less energy and natural resources, making it more sustainable, and here at Singleton’s, we’re all about sustainability.
